Arena: The sphere of action, a place of contest, historically a sanded place. Arena is the Spanish word for “sand”. Sand itself is a product of disintegrating, tidal forces. Sand in an hourglass measures our moments. It fills by the action of currents. It empties, ebbs and flows.
In the Arena series I continue a visual exploration of processes that approach and recede from equilibrium. These are works that reflect the conflicting forces of flux and stasis, two dynamics that underlie all of life.
My work straddles the disciplines of painting and sculpture. I have at my disposal two languages that, used together, enable me to create objects that embody the notion of impermanence.
I use color that is less "nameable", more ambiguous than primary or secondary colors. I am far more attracted to tertiary color than I am to primary or secondary. It is subtler and more complex, lending itself to the visual expression of process. It is analogous to the importance of the interstitial, “between-space” that gives power to the events and definable moments of a life or a history.
